Flagship Initiatives

The $1 million Broad Prize for Urban Education is the largest education award in the country given to school districts. The Broad Prize is awarded each year to honor urban school districts that demonstrate the greatest overall performance and improvement in student achievement while reducing achievement gaps among low-income students and students of color. All of the prize money goes to provide college scholarships to high school seniors in the finalist and winning districts who have demonstrated improvement. Since 2002, the Foundation has provided scholarships to more than 1,100 students.

The $250,000 Broad Prize for Public Charter Schools is an annual award given to the urban public charter school management organization that demonstrates the most outstanding overall student performance and improvement in the country while reducing achievement gaps among students of color and low-income students.

The Broad Residency is a leadership development program that places qualified participants into full-time high-level managerial positions in school districts, charter management organizations, and federal/state departments of education. Residents often lead projects like opening new schools, managing budget processes, increasing operational efficiencies and supporting major policy initiatives.

The Broad Academy is an advanced development program that identifies and prepares experienced leaders to successfully transform urban public education systems so that all students have the opportunity to succeed. Participants attend extended weekend sessions over the course of 18 months while continuing to work in their current jobs. Graduates are raising student achievement faster than comparison groups after three years in their positions.
