Flagship Initiatives

The $1 million Broad Prize for Urban Education is the largest education award in the country given to school districts. The Broad Prize is awarded each year to honor urban school districts that demonstrate the greatest overall performance and improvement in student achievement while reducing achievement gaps among low-income students and students of color. All of the prize money goes to provide college scholarships to high school seniors in the finalist and winning districts who have demonstrated improvement. Since 2002, the Foundation has provided scholarships to more than 1,100 students.

The $250,000 Broad Prize for Public Charter Schools is an annual award given to the urban public charter school management organization that demonstrates the most outstanding overall student performance and improvement in the country while reducing achievement gaps among students of color and low-income students.

The mission of The Broad Center for the Management of School Systems is to raise student achievement by recruiting, training and supporting leadership talent from across America to transform urban public school systems. These individuals are passionate about public education and have deep experience ensuring that organizations run successfully — helping them create the conditions that will enable students and educators to succeed. The Broad Center operates two leadership development programs: The Broad Academy and The Broad Residency in Urban Education.
