Effective LeadershipTo become effective, efficient organizations that serve students well, American school districts and schools need strong, talented leadership. The Broad Foundation invests in rigorous recruitment, training and support to engage the best and brightest leaders—both in and out of K-12 education—in transforming American urban education. We work to redefine the traditional roles, practices and policies of superintendents, district executives, principals, mayors, school board members and progressive union leaders to better serve students. |

Efficient OrganizationsEvery person and every dollar in school district central offices and schools must be focused—efficiently and effectively—on students, not adults, and must be held accountable for results. When a central office operates efficiently and effectively, it serves students well by pushing all available resources down to the classroom. We invest in efforts to institute financial controls, technology and accountability systems in large urban school districts and charter management organizations. |

Healthy CompetitionCompetition among American schools is healthy. Just as competition in higher education has led American universities to be among the world’s best, competition in K-12 public schools creates attractive choices for parents and students and can likewise raise American public schools to be among the best in the world. While most of The Broad Foundation’s focus is on improving traditional public schools, we also proudly support high-quality public charter management organizations that are among the most successful urban American schools today at helping poor and minority students learn. Traditional school districts and schools nationwide today are also learning valuable reform lessons from effective public charter schools. |

Human CapitalAll students do better when they are supported by a good teacher. Quality teachers are the single most important lever to raise student achievement. We support efforts to provide better pay for better teachers, improve how school districts recruit, hire and develop teachers, ensure that the best educators teach in the neediest schools and partner with progressive labor unions to provide teachers with the professional support they need to excel. |

Best PracticesBest practices should be shared. Although most American discourse is focused on what isn’t working in public education today, pockets of success nationwide show that success isn’t just possible—it is happening. We support efforts to identify and share best practices across public schools, including holding all children to the same high standards and expectations and offering them equal opportunities to learn. |
