The Broad Foundation supports AmericaWorks, an effort to build political will to reform the American retirement system. AmericaWorks aims to bring together key leaders from across the political spectrum to agree on a new approach to public and private sector retirement.
CENTER FOR AMERICAN PROGRESS
The Broad Foundation supports the education program of the Center for American Progress, a progressive think tank dedicated to improving the lives of Americans through ideas and actions. With the foundation's support, the Center for American Progress is producing papers and policy briefs on topics ranging from expanded learning time, differential pay for principals and teachers, comparability in Title I funding, and common education standards.
EDUCATION REFORM NOW!
The Broad Foundation supports Education Reform Now!'s (ERN) national and state education and advocacy efforts, including building a strong network of reformers to transform our nation’s public schools. ERN also educates policymakers about the changes needed to dramatically improve our public school systems, including allowing parents the freedom to choose an education that is best for their children.
FOUNDATION FOR EXCELLENCE IN EDUCATION
The Broad Foundation supports The Foundation for Excellence in Education (FEE), launched by former Florida Governor Jeb Bush to work with governors and state legislators in advancing education reforms at the state and national levels. FEE works to present a strong, coordinated, reform-focused voice on federal education matters, specifically Elementary and Secondary Education Act reauthorization, as well as to identify and mentor the next generation of education reform leaders.
HARVARD UNIVERSITY EDUCATION INNOVATION LABORATORY
The Broad Foundation supports the Education Innovation Laboratory at Harvard University (“EdLabs”). A groundbreaking effort led by Harvard University professor Roland Fryer, EdLabs brings more rigorous research and development to the education sector. The goal of this work is to understand underlying causes of achievement gaps, identify targeted high-impact reproducible reform interventions, and then to facilitate the spread of these initiatives.
THE JAMES B. HUNT INSTITUTE
The Broad Foundation supports the Hunt Institute’s annual Governors Education Symposium. The Hunt Institute has established itself as a leading education policy organization serving governors from both political parties. At each annual symposium, the Hunt Institute aims to identify key education issues, to share research and to present the best expertise available in the education arena, with the goal of empowering policy makers to take a role in the education reform movement.
THE NATIONAL GOVERNORS ASSOCIATION
The Broad Foundation supports the National Governors Association (NGA), a bi-partisan membership organization. The foundation provides support for the NGA's education advisors meeting where governors and their senior staff are brought up to speed on education issues. The goal of this orientation is to raise awareness of the urgent need for education reform, build a greater understanding of state policy issues and share best practices.
NATIONAL CENTER ON TIME & LEARNING
The Broad Foundation supports the National Center on Time & Learning (NCTL)'s efforts to expand learning time to help students meet the demands of the 21st century. Research strongly indicates a longer school day and year can help all students achieve at higher levels. Through its own research and policy advances, NCTL aims to close the achievement gap and help schools, districts and states provide a better education for all students.
PARTNERSHIP FOR PUBLIC SERVICE
The Partnership for Public Service (PPS) is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization that works with federal government agencies to improve their human capital systems and performance. With the support of The Broad Foundation, PPS is working with the U.S. Department of Education to train leaders to create a more transparent, innovative and results-oriented department.
POLICY INNOVATORS IN EDUCATION NETWORK
With the support of The Broad Foundation, the Policy Innovators in Education Network (PIENet) provides coordination and support for a number of aggressive statewide education advocacy organizations. By strengthening these organizations, PIENet helps policymakers implement reforms that aid in closing achievement gaps, creating urgency in low-performing districts, increasing teacher effectiveness and accountability, protecting high-performing charter management organizations and improving transparency for educational funding systems.
SACRAMENTO COUNTY OFFICE OF EDUCATION - CALIFORNIA COMMON CORE INITIATIVE COMMISSION
The Broad Foundation supports the Sacramento County Office of Education in its work to create California’s Common Core Initiative Commission. The objective of the Common Core Initiative is to ensure that every state has high, rigorous and internationally competitive content standards so that all students have the reading and math skills to be college and career ready by the end of high school. The Common Core Initiative also seeks student achievement results that are comparable across states.
US DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION: RACE TO THE TOP AND INVESTING IN INNOVATION
Race to the Top is a federal competitive grant program designed to stimulate K-12 education reform throughout the nation. The Broad Foundation has supported several states in their Race to the Top application process. The foundation also supported a convening of Race to the Top winners to build cross-state collaboration and information sharing so that successful approaches can be replicated and scaled.
Investing in Innovation is a federal program designed to provide competitive grants to applicants implementing innovative practices to improve education, including improving student achievement, closing achievement gaps and increasing graduation rates. The Broad Foundation supported the application process of several organizations.
"WAITING FOR SUPERMAN" and "THE LOTTERY"
The Broad Foundation supports Participant Media's film "Waiting for 'Superman'" in its call for dramatically better opportunities for students and teachers through common core standards, effective teaching, great schools and literacy. "Waiting for 'Superman,'" a feature-length documentary by Davis Guggenheim, the Academy Award-winning director of "An Inconvenient Truth," provides a deeply personal exploration of the current state of public education in the U.S.
The Broad Foundation also supports "The Lottery," a feature-length documentary directed by Madeleine Sackler and shot by award-winning cinematographer Wolfgang Held. "The Lottery" calls our nation to action to avert educational catastrophe and makes the case that any child can succeed.
